Welcome to HITEC University Taxila
It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as the Vice Chancellor of HITEC University, an institution founded on the principles of excellence, innovation, integrity, and service to society. Located in the historic city of Taxila, one of the world's oldest centers of learning, HITEC University stands at the intersection of a rich intellectual heritage and a dynamic industrial ecosystem. Our close association with Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) provides a distinctive advantage, enabling us to integrate academic knowledge with industrial expertise, technological innovation, and national development priorities.
The twenty-first century is characterized by rapid technological transformation, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, digitalization, and the emergence of Industry 5.0. In this evolving landscape, universities must serve not only as centers of learning but also as engines of innovation, research, entrepreneurship, and socio-economic progress. At HITEC University, we embrace this responsibility with a clear vision: to become a leading technological university that contributes meaningfully to Pakistan's knowledge economy and industrial future.
The foundation of HITEC University is unique. Inspired by the legacy of Heavy Industries Taxila, one of Pakistan's premier engineering and manufacturing organizations, we are committed to cultivating a culture of innovation, problem-solving, and technological excellence. This strategic linkage provides our students and faculty with opportunities to engage with real-world engineering challenges, industrial processes, advanced technologies, and applied research that directly contribute to national development.
Throughout my academic and professional career, I have remained committed to advancing higher education, fostering research excellence, strengthening quality assurance, and promoting meaningful collaboration between academia, industry, and government. I firmly believe that the future belongs to institutions that can successfully transform knowledge into innovation, innovation into enterprise, and enterprise into societal impact. Guided by this philosophy, HITEC University is embarking upon a transformative journey aimed at achieving national prominence and global recognition.
Our strategic priorities focus on academic excellence, impactful research, technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and internationalization. We are strengthening our academic programs to meet emerging global demands, enhancing research capabilities across disciplines, and fostering multidisciplinary collaborations that address pressing industrial and societal challenges. Through our Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC), Business Incubation Center (BIC), and strong industrial partnerships, we are creating an ecosystem where ideas are nurtured, discoveries are translated into solutions, and innovation flourishes.
We envision HITEC University as a university where classrooms connect seamlessly with laboratories, laboratories connect with industry, and industry connects with society. Our graduates will not merely be job seekers; they will be innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers, and leaders capable of shaping the future of technology, engineering, business, and public service. By leveraging our proximity to Heavy Industries Taxila and other strategic partners, we aim to develop a model of university-industry collaboration that serves as a benchmark for higher education institutions across the region.
At the heart of our mission lies an unwavering commitment to student success. We strive to provide a transformative educational experience that develops intellectual curiosity, professional competence, ethical values, leadership skills, and a lifelong passion for learning. We seek to produce graduates who are not only technically proficient but also socially responsible citizens capable of making meaningful contributions to their communities and the nation.
As we move forward, our ambition is clear: to position HITEC University among the leading universities of Pakistan and an emerging center of excellence recognized internationally for innovation, research, industry engagement, and academic quality. Achieving this vision will require collective effort, shared purpose, and an enduring commitment to excellence.
I invite our students, faculty, alumni, industry partners, and stakeholders to join us in this exciting journey of transformation. Together, we will build a future-ready university that honors its heritage, embraces innovation, serves the nation, and inspires generations to come.
Prof. Dr. Sohail Asghar
Vice Chancellor
HITEC University, Taxila
Vice Chancellor
HITEC University, Taxila Cantt
Prof. Dr. SOHAIL ASGHAR holds a PhD in Computer Science from Monash University, Australia (QS Rank: 42), and has over two decades of academic, research, and leadership experience across premier institutions. He has served as Director UIIT at Arid University, Principal Investigator at the National Center of Artificial Intelligence, and held multiple leadership roles at COMSATS University Islamabad, including Dean (FIST and FBA), Chairman FIST, Incharge Islamabad Campus, and Head of R&D.
Professor Asghar led teams managing budgets exceeding Rs. 3.2 billion and over 700 employees at COMSATS University Islamabad Campus, spearheading institutional development, academic program expansion, and digitization of key processes. He increased revenue by launching innovative, industry-oriented academic programs and boosting student intake, while attracting external funding and industry sponsorships to ease the university's financial constraints. Through strategic collaboration with industry partners, he oversaw major infrastructure upgrades without burdening campus finances. Professor Asghar emphasized in-house resource optimization over outsourcing and significantly enhanced student services by upgrading the Student Affairs division. He also established effective communication channels to ensure smooth policy implementation across university stakeholders. As General Chair of FIT 24, he upheld and advanced the university's nineteen-year legacy of organizing its flagship international IT conference.
The Medical Imaging and Diagnostic Lab — a funded project worth Rs. 117 million at COMSATS University Islamabad — was led by Prof. Dr. Sohail Asghar as Principal Investigator, focusing on AI-driven medical diagnostic solutions and technology transfer. The lab developed advanced deep learning–based systems including the Tuberculosis Screening System (TDS), Tashkhees (Breast Cancer Diagnostic System), and BrainViz (Brain Tumor Diagnostic System), integrated with an AI-powered DICOM Viewer capable of automated detection, segmentation, report generation, and voice-assisted interaction. These systems achieve high diagnostic accuracy and have been clinically deployed in hospitals and diagnostic laboratories, supported by national and international collaborations.
During his tenure at KSOFT (a subsidiary of KRL), Professor Asghar exhibited strong and multidimensional leadership capabilities, managing personnel while executing an executive-level role. He demonstrated strategic foresight by formulating IT strategies and spearheading corporate training programs for both government and private organizations.
Internationally, he spent eight years in Australia and the UK in research and teaching roles, including a postdoctoral fellowship at Monash. He has mobilized substantial funding — Rs. 97.57 million nationally (CUI) and AUD 40 million internationally (Monash), totaling over Rs. 7.2 billion.
He has a distinguished track record in institutional restructuring, faculty development, governance, and policy formulation. With over 2,000 citations and more than 200 national and international academic recognitions, including HEC travel grants and productivity awards, he has made significant contributions to academia. He is a pioneer in the design and implementation of outcome-based education (OBE) in computer science at CUI Islamabad, contributing significantly to the advancement of academic standards and curriculum development.
A prominent figure in Pakistan's artificial intelligence landscape, his influence continues to grow internationally through groundbreaking research, collaborative projects, and leadership roles in prestigious AI conferences and forums.
